Equality and Diversity
At Broadoak a key school message and part of our ethos is:
Broadoak – No Outsiders … We are all different, however, we all belong!
As a school, we understand the importance of preparing our children for life in modern Britain and part of this is helping children to respect and celebrate diversity within our school community and more widely. Part of the work we do is talk to the children about the Equality Act, using picture books to explore the protected characteristics within it. These include:
- Race
- Religion
- Gender Identity
- Age
- Disabilities
- Sexual Orientation
- Gender
As part of our Personal, Social and Health Education curriculum (PSHE), all classes work on the Valuing Difference theme in Autumn Term which is linked to the Core theme of Living in the Wider World. We use picture books in PSHE lessons in the Autumn term to help us explore the themes. A sample of the books each year group will be using are listed below. In assembly, we also look at books on respecting, accepting and celebrating diversity and our own uniqueness.
We also use Picture News weekly which allows children to explore current and significant news items, to debate and discuss whilst drawing upon UN Convention on the Rights of a Child, Protected Characteristics and British Values.
